ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้สร้างจากเรื่องจริงที่เกิดขึ้นเป็น ข่าวหน้าหนึ่งของ หนังสือพิมพ์ในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาติดต่อกันหลายวัน โดยคดีนี้สืบเนื่องมาจากเด็กชายคนหนึ่งได้ขโมยเงิน 5 ดอลล่าร์เพื่อบรรเทาความหิวโหยของเขาและน้องสาว แต่ถูกจับและติดคุก เขาได้หลบหนีเพื่อไปหาน้องสาว แต่ถูกจับได้ จากนั้นเขาก็ถูกทรมานต่างๆ ในคุก Alcatraz แห่งนี้ ไม่ว่าจะถูกจับมัด เฆี่ยน ตี หรือถูกตัดเส้นเอ็นขา และต้องถูกขังอยู่ในคุกมืดโดยไม่ได้ออกมาเลยถึง 3 ปี 2 เดือน จนทำให้เขากลายเป็นโรคจิต ผลจากการต่อสู้คดีนี้ทำให้คุก Alcatraz ต้องกลายเป็นจำเลยและถูกปิดในที่สุด และกลายเป็นคุกประวัติศาสตร์ของชาติอเมริกา
