เพียงไม่กี่อาทิตย์ก่อนถึงวันเกษียณของเจ้าหน้าที่ทั ณฑ์บน แจ็ค มาบรี้ [Robert De Niro] เค้าหวังว่านักโทษรายสุดท้ายที่เขารับผิดชอบจะเป็นไป อย่างราบรื่น แต่เรื่องราวไม่ได้เป็นอย่างที่แจ็คต้องการ เพราะเค้าต้องรับผิดชอบคดีของ สโตน ครีสัน [Edward Norton] ผู้ต้องหาข้อหาวางเพลิงที่ยื่นขอทัณฑ์บน ถึงแม้แจ็คจะรู้สึกเห็นใจในตัวของสโตนแต่ก็มีบางอย่า งที่ทำให้แจ็คตัดสินใจ ไม่อนุญาตทัณฑ์บนให้สโตน

และเมื่อจนแต้มจึงทำให้สโตนมีความคิดในเรื่องสุดอันต รายและมีความเสี่ยงสูง โดยสโตนวางแผนให้ ลูเซียสต้า [Milla Jovovich] ภรรยาสาวสวยของเค้าหาทางเข้าตีสนิทกับแจ๊คเพื่อล่อลว งให้แจ๊คใจอ่อนเพื่อ กรุยทางสู่อิสรภาพของตนเอง แต่แล้วแรงจูงใจแรกก็ถูกแปรเปลี่ยนด้วยแรงราคะความลั บที่ถูกฝังไว้ในอดีตของ ทั้งสามคนถูกขุดขึ้นมาเพื่อใช้ในเกมส์แห่งการหลอกลวง ที่นำพาไปสู่ความหายนะ !!!
