เรื่องราวเล่าถึงสังคมในยุคอนาคตซึ่งเต็มไปด้วยมนุษย ์ที่ไร้อารมณ์ความ รู้สึก โดยมนุษย์สายพันธุ์ดังกล่าวถูกเรียกว่า Equals แต่จู่ ๆ เหตุการณ์ที่ไม่คาดฝันก็เกิดขึ้นกับพวกเขา เมื่อเชื้อโรคร้ายชนิดหนึ่งค่อย ๆ กัดกินชีวิตของทุกคนมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ด้วยเหตุนี้ มนุษย์สายพันธุ์ Equals จึงต้องหลบหนีไปยังที่ห่างไกล โดยมี ซิลาส (นิโคลัส ฮอลท์) เป็นผู้โชคร้ายที่เกิดติดเชื้อมรณะเพียงคนเดียว จนเป็นสาเหตุให้เขาถูกขับออกจากถิ่นที่อยู่ในที่สุด แต่อย่างไรก็ตามเขาก็ยังโชคดีที่ได้รู้ว่า ยังมีหญิงสาวที่ชื่อว่า เนีย (คริสเตน สจ๊วต) เข้าใจความรู้สึกของเขาเป็นอย่างไร โดยเธอคนนี้คือผู้หญิงที่สามารถซ่อนการแสดงออกทางอาร มณ์ได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม ซึ่งนับจากนี้ไป เขาทั้งสองคนต้องทำทุกวิถีทางเพื่อหลบหนีและเอาชีวิต รอด
