จอร์จ (Kevin Kline) สถาปนิกวัยกลางคนผู้ซึ่งใช้ชีวิตตามใจตนเองโดยไม่สนใ จสังคม หลังจากหย่าขาดจากโรบิน (Kristin Scott Thomas) ภรรยาสาวนานหลายปี ความสัมพันธ์ของจอร์จกับแซม (Hayden Christensen) ลูกชายเลวร้ายถึงขีดสุด

อาศัยอยู่กับครอบครัวของคุณแม่และพ่อเลี้ยง แซมในวัย 16 ปี กลายเป็นวัยรุ่นสุดแสบต่อต้านสังคม เสพสารระเหย แต่งหน้า มีเพื่อนชายพยายามชักชวนไปขายบริการทางเพศเนืองๆ

ด้วยความเป็นคนหัวเก่า ไม่ปรับตัวให้เข้ากับการทำงานในออฟฟิศทันสมัย จอร์จถูกขอให้ออกจากงาน และในวันเดียวกันนั้นเองเขาก็ล้มลงหมดสติถูกส่งเข้าโ รงพยาบาล ด้วยโรคมะเร็งระยะสุดท้าย เขามีชีวิตอยู่ได้อีกไม่กี่เดือน ในโรงพยาบาลนางพยาบาลใจดีสัมผัสได้ถึงความว้าเหว่ปวด ร้าวของเขา เธอสัมผัสเขาอย่างอ่อนโยน นานเท่าไหร่แล้วที่ไม่มีใครกอดคุณ

หลังจากออกจากโรงพยาบาลจอร์จปกปิดความเจ็บป่วยของเขา จากทุกๆ คน แต่ตั้งใจเต็มที่ที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงทุกๆ สิ่งในชีวิตของเขา รื้อบ้านรังหนูสร้างบ้านในฝันตามที่ออกแบบเอาไว้มานา นแสนนาน รับตัวลูกชายไปอยู่ด้วยตลอดปิดเทอม ระหว่างสร้างบ้านพวกเขาต้องย้ายไปอาศัยในโรงเก็บรถที ่ไม่มีแม้กระทั่งห้องสุขา แซมถูกบังคับให้อยู่กับพ่ออย่างลำบากใจ

ทีละเล็กทีละน้อยความสัมพันธ์ของพ่อและลูกชาย รวมไปถึงอดีตภรรยางอกงามขึ้นเรื่อยๆ แม้จะต้องจากไปอย่างไม่มีวันหวนกลับ แต่จอร์จได้สอนตัวเอง ลูกชาย และโลกรอบตัวเขาให้เรียนรู้บทเรียนความรักอีกบทหนึ่ง ได้ในที่สุด
