เอ็ดดี้ คาซาลิวิตช์ (เคียอานู รีฟส์) นักศึกษาหนุ่มจากมหาวิทยาลัยชิคาโก
ผู้ซึ่งทำงานเป็นช่างเทคนิคและกับนักฟิสิกส์ ดร. ลิลี่ ซินแคลร์ (ราเชล ไวซ์) พร้อมด้วยทีมนักวิทยาศาสตร์กลุ่มหนึ่งเพื่อการค้นคว้ า
และวิจัยเทคโนโลยีพลังงานทางเลือกชนิดใหม่ที่สะอาด ปลอดมลพิษ และสามารถเข้าถึงได้ง่าย ในการทดลองหลายๆ ครั้งนั้น
ยังไม่ดีเท่าที่ควร แต่ครั้งล่าสุดนั้นได้ผลลัพท์เป็นที่น่าพอใจและถือได ้ว่าเป็นความก้าวหน้าครั้งสำคัญอย่างยิ่ง...แต่ทว่า
กลับเกิดเหตุไม่คาดฝันเกิดขึ้น ณ สถานที่ทำการทดลองแห่งนี้ เมื่อมีคนร้ายกลุ่มหนึ่งเข้าไปลอบสังหารนักวิทยาศาสต ร์อาวุโสผู้หนึ่ง
วางระเบิดสถานที่เพื่อทำลายงานวิจัยทิ้ง และจับตัวหนึ่งในทีมงานอีกคนหนึ่งไป ซึ่งต่อมาไม่นานนัก คาซาลิวิตช์และซินแคลร์
ก็ถูกตั้งข้อสงสัยว่าเป็นผู้ลงมือทำหรือไม่ จนในที่สุด พวกเขาก็ถูกทางการติดตามและยังต้องหลบหนีจากกลุ่มบุค คลที่ทำลายห้องทดลองอีกด้วย
และมีเพียงคนเดียวที่จะช่วยพวกเขาได้ นั่นก็คือ พอล แชนน่อน (มอร์แกน ฟรีแมน) ซึ่งเป็นผู้ออกทุนในการทำการทดลองนี้...
