Plot:

In the midst of World War II, the battle below the seas rages. The Nazis have the upper edge as the Allies are unable to crack their war codes. That is, until a wrecked U-boat sends out an SOS signal, and the Allies realize this is their chance to seize the 'enigma coding machine'. เรื่องย่อ

ค.ศ. 1942 ในระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 กองทัพเรือสหรัฐจับสัญญาณเรดาร์ได้ว่า เรือดำน้ำของนาซีเยอรมันรุ่น อู-571 (U-571) ลำหนึ่งจอดเสียลอยน้ำอยู่กลางมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติกเหนือ ที่สำคัญในเรือลำน้ำมีเครื่องส่งสัญญาณ อีนิกม่า (Enigma) อยู่ด้วย ซึ่งถ้ายึดเครื่องนี้มาได้จะเป็นจุดหักเหของยุทธบริเ วณมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติกเลยทีเดียว

ดังนั้น ภารกิจพิเศษครั้งนี้จึงถูกกำหนดขึ้น เรือโท ไมค์ ดาห์ลเกร็น (บิลล์ แพ็กตัน) อดีตกัปตันเรือดำน้ำสมัยสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 ที่กำลังจะปลดระวางตนเอง ต้องกลับมาปฏิบัติหน้าที่อีกครั้ง โดยมี แอนดรูว์ ไทเลอร์ (แมทธิว แม็คคอนาเฮย์) นายทหารหนุ่มรุ่นน้องผู้คอยโอกาสที่จะขึ้นมาบังคับบั ญชาเรือดำน้ำเองเป็นผู้ช่วย โดยภารกิจครั้งนี้มีผู้ล่วงรู้เพียงไม่กี่คน ทั้งหมดจะต้องปลอมตัวเป็นทหารนาซีเยอรมันแสร้งเข้าไป ช่วยเหลือเรือ อู-571 ลำนั้นและยึดไว้ให้ได้ แต่ขณะที่ปฏิบัติการอันน่าระทึกอยู่นั้น กัปตันดาห์ลเกร็นก็ถูกระเบิดเสียชีวิตกลางทะเล ไทเลอร์จึงต้องขึ้นควบคุมเรือแทน และยังต้องนำพาเรือที่ทั้งเสียและเก่าครึลำนี้พร้อมด ้วยชีวิตนายทหารอีก 8 คน ที่บางคนเป็นเด็กหนุ่มเพิ่งจบชั้นมัธยมมาด้วยซ้ำฝ่าว ิกฤตต่าง ๆ ไปให้ได้ ทั้งการโจมตีจากทั้งฝ่ายเยอรมันและฝ่ายสหรัฐอเมริกาเ อง
