เรื่องย่อ...

พอล เอดจ์คอมบ์ (แด๊บส์ เกรีย-รับบทเอดจ์คอมบ์ในวัยชรา) อดีตพัศดีในบ้านพักคนชราเล่าเรื่องความหลังของตนในปี ค.ศ. 1935 สมัยยังทำงานเป็นพัศดีอยู่

(ทอม แฮงค์-รับบทเอดจ์คอมบ์ในวัยหนุ่ม) ให้ อีเลน คอนเนลลี่ (อีฟ เบรนท์) เพื่อนหญิงที่พักอยู่ที่บ้านพักคนชราด้วยกันฟัง

ในขณะประจำการที่โคลด์ เมาท์เทนท์ ทางใต้ ในยุคของการกดขี่ด้านชนชั้นและสีผิว งานของเอดจ์คอมมบ์และพัศดีคนอื่นๆ

คือการดูแลนักโทษประหาร ที่รอการเดินทางผ่านเส้นทาง ที่เรียกว่า กรีนไมล์ (Green Mile) ทางเดินสีเขียวที่นักโทษใช้

เป็นทางเดินออกจากห้องขังไปสู่เก้าอี้ไฟฟ้า ณ ที่นี่นักโทษทุกคนล้วนแต่สำนึกในโทษของตัวเองแล้วทั้ งนั้น และมีชีวิตอยู่

เพื่อรอวันสุดท้าย ทำให้พัศดีทุกคนล้วนแต่เห็นใจและผูกพันกับนักโทษทุกค น

เป็นเวลากว่าหลายปี ที่เอดจ์คอมบ์เดินไปบนทางเดินนี้พร้อมกับนักโทษหลายต ่อหลายประเภท แต่เขาไม่เคยรู้สึกผูกพันกับใคร

เหมือนอย่างที่รู้สึกกับ จอห์น ค็อฟฟี่ (ไมเคิล คลาร์ก ดันแดน) นักโทษร่างยักษ์ผิวดำ ที่ต้องคดีฆาตกรรมเด็กหญิงสองคน

จากรูปลักษณ์ภายนอกของค็อฟฟี่ มันเป็นเรื่องไม่ยากที่เขาจะฆ่าใครสักคน แต่จากพฤติกรรมของเขา กลับตรงข้ามกับสิ่งที่ใครๆเห็น ค็

อฟฟี่เป็นคนที่รักสงบ จิตใจอ่อนโยน และกลัวความมืดเป็นที่สุด เอดจ์คอมบ์เองเป็นโรคนิ่วในกระเพาะปัสสาวะ วันหนึ่งค็อฟฟี่ก็ได้ตะปบ

ไปที่เป้ากางเกงของเขา และแล้วโรคที่ทรมานเอดจ์คอมบ์มานานก็หายเป็นปลิดทิ้ง และพัศดีคนอื่น ๆ ก็ได้รับปาฏิหาริย์เช่นนี้จากค็อฟฟี่เหมือนกัน

ทำให้ทุกคนรู้สึกดีและผูกพันกับค็อฟฟี่ สิ่งเหล่านี้ก่อความสงสัยในใจเอดจ์คอมบ์ว่า ค็อฟฟี่สังหารเด็กหญิงสองคนนั้นจริงหรือไม่ เอดจ์คอมบ์

ได้เดินทางไปถาม เบิร์ต แฮมเมอร์สมิธ (แกรี ซีนิส) ทนายความที่ต่างรัฐ ผู้เป็นผู้แก้ต่างคดีให้ค็อฟฟี่

ค็อฟฟี่ได้ช่วยเหลือเมลินดา (แพทริเซีย คาร์กสัน) ภรรยาที่ป่วยเป็นมะเร็งระยะสุดท้ายของ ฮัล มัวร์ส หัวหน้าพัศดี (เดวิด มอส)

จนหายในที่สุด แต่ท้ายที่สุดค็อฟฟี่ก็ไม่อาจหลีกเลี่ยงโทษประหารได้ นั่นทำให้เอดจ์คอมบ์และพัศดีทุกคนต้องหลั่งน้ำตา และจดจำค็อฟฟี่ไปตลอดชีวิต

สำหรับตัวเอดจ์คอมบ์เอง เขาเปิดเผยให้อีลินรู้ว่า เขาอยู่ที่นี่มานานกว่า 60 ปีแล้ว ณ ตอนนั้นเขาอายุได้ 44 ปี และบัดนี้เขาอายุ 108 ปี และจะยังอยู่ต่อไปอีกเรื่อย ๆ
