ไฟนอลแฟนตาซี XIII จะกล่าวถึงโลกที่มี "ฟาลซี" (fal Cie) วัตถุที่มีคริสตัลอยู่ภายใน ผู้ที่ถูกเฟลซีย์เลือก
เพื่อภาระสำคัญจะเรียกว่า "ลูซีย์" (l Cie) หากลูซีย์ผู้ใดสิ้นชีวิตก่อนภารกิจสำเร็จจะแปลงสภาพไ ปเป็นมอน
สเตอร์ที่เรียก ว่า "ซีคอร์ปส" (Cie Corpses) โลกทัศน์ของภาคนี้แบ่งออกเป็นสองส่วนใหญ่ คือ "โคคูน"
และ "พัลส์" หรือชื่อเต็ม "กรังพัลส์" (Gran=Pulse) โดยทั้งสองโลกมีฟาลซีย์เป็นของตนเอง โดยในเกม
ประชากรในโคคูนเริ่มกังวลว่าพวกเขาอาจถูกขับมายังพัล ส์ โลกที่พวกเขาคิดว่าเป็นเหมือนนรก

ตัวละครในไฟนอลแฟนตาซีภาคนี้จะไม่ใช้ระบบค่าประสบการ ณ์ แต่จะใช้ระบบคริสตัลซึ่งมีความคล้ายคลึง
กับระบบกระดานสเฟียร์ในไฟนอลแฟนตาซี X นั่นคือเมื่อจบการต่อสู้แต่ละรอบตัวละครจะได้รับแต้ม คริสตัล
(Crystallium Points:CP) สำหรบการเดินในโครงข่ายคริสตัล เพื่อเพิ่มความสามารถให้แก่ตัวละครโดย
ในโครงข่ายจะประกอบด้วยอบิลิตี้ที่จับกันเป็นรูปแผ่น จาน และมีอบิลิตี้อื่นๆ แตกสาขาออกไปรอบๆ อีกด้วย
CP ที่ได้จะมากหรือน้อยขึ้นอยู่กับระดับคริสตัล (Crystallium Points:CL) ซึ่งจะเพิ่มมาเองเมื่อได้ดำเนิน
เนื้อเรื่องไปเรื่อยๆ เป็นตัวแปรสำคัญ
