ในช่วงระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่สอง เอริก โลแมกซ์ (โคลิน เฟิร์ธ) นายทหารยศร้อยตรีประจำเหล่าสื่อสาร แห่งกองทัพสหราชอาณาจักร ก็ถูกกองกำลังญี่ปุ่นจับตัวและถูกส่งไปยังค่ายเชลยใน ประเทศไทย ซึ่งเขาก็ต้องถูกทรมานและถูกบังคับให้เป็นแรงงานในกา รสร้างรถไฟสายมรณะ หลายปีต่อมา โลแมกซ์ กลับมาใช้ชีวิตในอังกฤษ แต่บาดแผลทางใจก็ยังคงตามหลอกหลอน เขาได้รับกำลังใจและการสนับสนุนจาก แพทริเชีย (นิโคล คิดแมน) ภรรยาของเขา ให้เผชิญหน้ากับอดีตเพื่อหาบทสรุปให้กับตัวเอง โลแมกซ์ ตัดสินใจเดินทางกลับไปยังสถานที่ที่เขาเคยถูกคุมขัง แต่ที่นั้นเขาก็ต้องเผชิญหน้ากับ นากาเซะ (ฮิโรยูกิ ซานาดะ) นายทหารญี่ปุ่นที่เคยเป็นผู้ทรมานเขา โลแมกซ์ ต้องเจอกับทางเลือกที่สำคัญของชีวิต เมื่อเขาต้องเลือกวิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการก้าวข้ามอดีตแ ละความเจ็บปวดของตัวเอง
